While battling cancer in Kansas, 14-year-old Keeton would mentally escape his treatments by imagining what it would be like to interact with sea turtles. He said, “I’ve loved them since I was a baby. I just love how they are and they’re green, my favorite color.” His wish gave him the opportunity to do just that.
Keeton and his family traveled to Boca Raton to be VIPs at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. His wish day was filled with behind-the-scenes access to the sea turtle rescues and rehabilitation center. The morning he arrived, a sea turtle was rescued by a fisherman so there was lots of work to do.
Keeton assisted in the initial examination of his new marine friend, helping to measure, weigh, and tag the turtle. They assessed the turtle’s condition to make sure that he wasn’t injured. Keeton fed sea turtles and held sea turtle hatchlings. They returned later that night to go on a sea turtle walk along the beach. He said, “It’s awesome to be here. I’ve never had an experience like this. It was amazing. To hold a sea turtle and feed a sea turtle – the whole thing was a great part.”
His mother added, “It is 10x more than what we expected. We expected to see sea turtles but to get to interact with them and let him feed them and help with the rescue. It’s amazing! It’s such a relief and it’s such a blessing to see him smiling and laughing and knowing in his heart he’s getting his dream come true.”
