With the first swing of his bat in tee ball, David from Pembroke Pines was hooked on baseball. At the age of 6, he took to the pitching mound and it’s been his position ever since. Now 16, David said, “Baseball is life. It’s what I live to do. It’s all I think about.” He knew his wish would have to do with baseball but did he want to meet his favorite team or be a major league player for the day? He chose a wish that had the potential to improve his pitching skills – the opportunity to undergo a biomechanics pitching evaluation with former big league pitcher Tom House.
Soon David and his family were off to the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles. At Dedeaux Field, home of the USC Trojans, he toured the ballpark including the bullpen and the training room. Then it was time to meet his pitching coach Tom House. David said, “Tom is a great human being and a great coach.”
David felt like a major league pitcher as he was hooked up to many sensors and instructed to throw some pitches as the equipment collected data on his pitching motion, posture and ball release. All the while, plenty of reporters stood by to document his every move under the watchful eye of his pitching idol Tom House.
A junior in high school, David aspires to pitch at the college level and credits his pitching evaluation with putting him on the radar for college scouts. Because of his visit with Tom House, David is “a much better pitcher.” He and his current coach analyze the tapes from pitching evaluation and make adjustments to his pitching motion. His wish was a grand slam experience that has greatly brightened his future!
