The best football games are played on home turf. But Azriel never imagined that he would be a quarterback on his own backyard football field!
Azriel’s wish for a custom, synthetic turf football field in his backyard was granted just a few years after completing his treatment for a brain tumor. His battle with cancer began with severe headaches at age 6 and continued with numerous surgeries to remove tumors. For Azriel’s mom, this wish was a beautiful moment in the long and difficult medical journey the family has endured. “After everything he’s been through, I wish someone could have shown us (his happiness) today,” she said.
It took months of planning and weeks of construction to put the field together in the backyard and it included several logistical challenges, including keeping it a secret from Azriel. His family kept him and his siblings from peeking into the backyard and even put hurricane shutters on the windows to conceal the outdoor surprise. Despite the challenges, the word was never leaked.
Azriel’s wish experience didn’t just end with the unveiling of his new field – his favorite NFL team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, provided more surprises on the teen’s big day! The Bucs sent an autographed football, jersey, helmet and a personalized video message from his favorite player. Azriel’s joy was contagious as he relished the special moment with his family and closest friends by his side.
This backyard football field isn’t big enough to host the Super Bowl, but to Azriel, it might as well be – it comes with custom logos in the end zone and on the goal post, as well as a scoreboard, a seating area and lights for late-night games.
“The memories made on this field are the ones he’s really going to remember,” said Azriel’s mom. “They’re going to carry on into a beautiful future.”
