Shane's wish to go to Australia was truly life-changing. After coming home from his trip, Shane wrote us a letter that described his wish experience... and he changed our lives, too.
Below is the story of his wish told in the best possible way: his own words.
I cannot even find the words to let you know what an incredible experience my trip to Australia was for me and my family.
The limousine that picked us up was an unexpected treat, making us all feel like celebrities. The trip was very, very long but we had a lot of fun experiences and when we arrived in Cairns and were met by a volunteer with Make-A-Wish, it made us feel so welcome and not like lost tourists.
The Great Barrier Reef was everything I hoped for and more... it was phenomenal. We were treated like royalty by the organizers. They were also very sensitive to my abilities and I cannot thank them enough. We got to hold a koala and meet some kangaroos up close - a dream of mine for so long.
When we got to Sydney... WOW! The harbor was spectacular! My mom and brother got to climb the bridge but I wouldn't have been able to manage that so my sister and I explored a little on our own. Then we toured the famous opera house. The real thing is so much bigger and better than in the "Finding Nemo" movie that inspired my wish.
Yes, my everyday life living with a back that is fused all the way down making it hard to move well, and arms that don't reach far, and having to deal with the challenges of a prosthesis for a leg can make life seem hard sometimes. But these opportunities and this trip that will be a memory I will never, ever forget. It makes it easy to push aside the thoughts of those challenges for a little while and I will be forever grateful that Make-A-Wish made this a reality for me and my family.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
