Since we don’t have glaciers in Florida, my son Patrick wished to go to Alaska to climb a real glacier. We had no idea his wintry wish would be life-changing for all of us. It was like a reward after the fight he fought just to be a normal kid again. His wish reminded me that there have been countless “blessings” that have come with his diagnosis.
In Alaska, we panned for gold, soared high above the glaciers in a helicopter, interacted with animals at the zoo and giggled along on a dog sled ride. Everything was a highlight. None of us stopped smiling the entire vacation. I’m not sure Patrick could have wished for anything grander! The icy landscape was so wide, the glacier was so big and we were at the top of it all.
I will never forget the look on my son’s face as he reached the top of the glacier. He taught me that even if the climb gets tough, you just get tougher. Just focus, give your everything and you can conquer anything. Patrick triumphed once again…this time in a battle he chose to fight.
Months after Patrick’s wish was granted, he and his sister still “play” Alaska. They fly around the living room and pretend that the couch is a glacier to climb. Make-A-Wish is truly magnificent. I will forever support and keep this organization in my heart.
