Madison, a 17-year-old who has a gastrointestinal condition, has always been fascinated by the human body. Fueled by her love for the popular medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy”, and her passion for surgery, she knew immediately what she wanted to wish for… the chance to be a cardiac surgeon for a day! The day began when Madison pulled up to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in a limousine. She was greeted by smiling doctors holding gifts and balloons, as well as Madison’s very own white doctor’s coat and stethoscope.
The Chief of Pediatrics and Congenital Heart Surgery, Dr. Frank Scholl, was Madison’s mentor for the day. “Madison is part of our team today. We really wanted to give her kind of an immersive experience and make her wish come true,” said Dr. Scholl.
Madison was in her element as she toured the hospital, mingled with the doctors and nurses, and assisted with patient care rounds. But the highlight of her day was when she was able to scrub in and observe a heart surgery on a newborn patient. “It makes me feel really good and honored to be able to do this. I just want to be able to help people and help them get better,” said Madison. #MadisonsAnatomy
