Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Florida Realtors recently named Jill Johns “Humanitarian of the Year” for 2013, an award given, in large part, due to her impact for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. Johns, a member of the nonprofit organization’s Board of Directors, is a former wish recipient herself, having met Arsenio Hall in 1992 while she was battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In the more than 20 years since her wish was granted, Johns has been active for Make-A-Wish in South Florida as a wish granter, fundraiser, and member of its speaker’s bureau, in addition to her current position on the board.
“At the end of the day, my heartbeat is Make-A-Wish and the children it serves,” said Johns, a waterfront and luxury property specialist at Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors. “I’ve been where these kids are and hope me being a survivor is living proof to them that they can also overcome a life-threatening illness.”
Johns, a Fort Lauderdale resident, accepted the award at the Florida Realtors conference in Orlando.
“Jill knows better than any of us the power of a wish,” said Norman Wedderburn, CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “She is an inspiration not only to our kids but also her fellow board members, staff, and volunteers who have witnessed firsthand her enthusiastic commitment to fulfilling our mission.”
Since 1983, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 9,000 wishes to children who have life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), or ‘wish to have’ (something) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost to them.
The Southern Florida chapter grants a wish every 16 hours, at an average cost of $5,000, and is committed to making a dream come true for every medically-eligible child in its territory, which includes 13 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It completes its mission without federal or state funding, raising money through corporate sponsorships, special events, foundation grants, and individual contributions.
