The Sunshine State Dance Challenge invites you to their 8th Annual World Salsa Championships and WSF All-Star DanceSport Championships, November 26-29, 2009. Join dancers and dance lovers for this weekend of fun! Saturday night’s festivities will include a sit down dinner, show and after party.

Rose’s Crowning Moment

Four-year-old Rose from Key West knows that fairy tales come true. Her dearest wish took her on a magical journey to Walt Disney World® Resort to become a princess, ride some roller coasters and meet her favorite Disney friends.

Once in Orlando, Rose and her family stayed at the fantastic Give Kids The World Village, a special resort designed solely for wish children with amenities fit for royalty. One truly majestic moment was watching the star she decorated be lifted to its permanent home on the ceiling in the Castle of Miracles.

At the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Rose’s fairy godmother pronounced her a princess. With a wave of her wand, Rose was transformed with a bejeweled tiara, gorgeous gown and glittering makeup. Other regal experiences included a visit to Cinderella’s Castle and the chance to shadow Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” for more than an hour. The pint-sized princess sought out every roller coaster and water ride. She rode any roller coaster that she was tall enough to go on and did so with her hands way up high.

At the end of her weeklong vacation, Rose asked her parents, “Why do we have to go home?” Her mother replied, “So other children can have their wishes granted.”

Blake Family Haunted House

Join the Blake Family, whose two sons are former wish children, as they host their annual Haunted House, “The Mercy Asylum,” in St. Lucie County. The Haunted House will be open from October 31st to November 1st. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. All donations will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. Cold Stone Creamery Hosts 8th Annual “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social”

Free Treats Served Up Sept. 24 to Benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation

WHAT: Will host the “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social,” a nationwide fundraising event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.

In South Florida, Cold Stone Creamery stores invite ice cream lovers to join celebrity scoopers at each location and experience the joy of free ice cream at a nostalgic event that promises wholesome family entertainment and fun activities.

From 5:00-8:00 p.m., Cold Stone Creamery visitors will receive a free 3 oz. serving of five-year-old wish kid Jack’s creation and can make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Lorraine Alvarez

Talk about a go getter! There’s one particular woman residing on the West Coast of Florida who embodies that phrase. Lorraine Alvarez became a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida through her involvement in the community. She was in attendance at a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce meeting on the day when a Make-A-Wish staff member gave a presentation about the Make-A-Wish mission. Lorraine decided to become a Make-A-Wish volunteer that same day because the essence of our Foundation resonated within her.

In January 2009, she attended a volunteer orientation with the desire to become a Wish Granter and Special Events volunteer. True to her word, Lorraine Alvarez took wish granting training that same month, picked up her wand and began to create smiles on children’s faces immediately. To date, she has completed four wishes and is currently working on two more. She has attended and helped with our events and does all of this with enthusiasm and ease. On top of all this, Lorraine also works full time and raises her 6-year-old daughter.

Lorraine felt that volunteering would be exciting and rewarding and we are hopeful that it has been. What we know for sure is that her skills and talents (she’s also bilingual!) have created excitement and rewards for our staff and wish children. Hats off to you, Lorraine. We look forward to you being a member of our family for many years to come.

Tommy Bahama Coconut Classic
